The Sutton Place Hotel, CHICAGO: Chicago’s World Class Hotel Creates Boutique Inn on a Grand Scale

Chicago, Illinois (June 5th, 2005)  - Chicago’s Sutton Place Hotel is redefining luxury.  The 23-story building in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast reinvented itself this spring with a complete $1.5 million renovation of its 246 guestrooms, conference rooms and lobby.

“The Sutton Place Hotel is committed to cutting edge style, sophistication and service,” said David Sowell,  General Manager of The Sutton Place Hotel.  “All changes were made with our guests’ comfort in mind.”

According to Terese Cataldo, principal of Cataldo Interiors Group Ltd., the Chicago-based design firm leading the renovation, the foremost goal was to modernize The Sutton Place Hotel’s original 1988 art deco design for 2003. The renovated lobby accomplishes that aim.  For instance, its carpet, an original creation, combines simple geometric shapes into a larger pattern of light earth tones, highlighting the lobby’s Canadian granite walls.  Floral still lifes by Robert Mapplethorpe and polished-chrome house phones add notable detail to the new foyer.

“We brightened the hotel while maintaining the integrity of its existing design,” said Cataldo, explaining the process.  “Most notably, there’s more color and light now.”

Upstairs, the changes to the guest rooms create the feel of an intimate boutique inn within a large, luxurious hotel.  Cataldo replaced the original thick window treatments with sheer white draperies, and custom-designed white-on-white striped, reflective wall covering further enhances the rooms’ natural light.  Polished chrome light fixtures throughout add an extra sparkle.  The guest rooms’ custom carpeting features lighter colors and a repeating linear pattern to produce a larger and more airy feel, with periwinkle, ultra-suede throw pillows and chairs serving as colorful focal points.

“The new design opens up the rooms,” said Sowell.  “Guests love the brighter décor.”

Additionally, 34 junior suites have been fitted with hand-made leather sleeper-sofas.  Rich red throw pillows and taupe chairs relax the suites’ living rooms, giving hotel guests space to entertain their own visitors while in residence.

Throughout all the guest rooms, mahogany furnishings, complemented by black leather headboards, underscore the modernized art deco aesthetic of the renovation.  Other furnishings, such as an innovatively designed desk that conceals electrical cords, focus on the business traveler.  Fitted with a dual-outlet light fixture that accommodates laptops, cell phone chargers and other office essentials, the desk’s extra wide top creates an ideal workspace.  Furthermore, its cushioned chair is built for comfort – perfect for any road-weary corporate travelers.  Over the course of the renovation, the special touches for which the hotel has long been known have remained consistent.  Each room still comes equipped with high-performance, full-size sound systems with AM/FM tuner and CD/DVD players, a complimentary assortment of music CDs, 25” televisions, high-speed Internet access, deep-soaking tubs and separate glass-enclosed showers.

“The Sutton Place Hotel devotes itself to consistent first-rate service and guest comfort,” said Sowell.  “Our interior renovation, our guest services and our first-class amenities make us as a top choice among visitors to the city looking for a luxurious, relaxed stay.”

Cataldo Interiors Group specializes in design and purchasing for the hospitality industry.  A leader in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years, the Chicago-based, boutique firm is currently developing many hospitality industry projects including the Millennium Center, a 365-unit, high-end condominium project in Chicago.
