At The Sutton Place Hotels, we are proud to partner with veritree as part of our sustainability commitment, planting 5 trees when a guest makes eco-friendly choices during their stay. Recently, we achieved an incredible milestone with almost 700,000 trees planted!  

What is veritree? 

 

veritree was founded in 2019 by the team behind tentree, with the aim to empower businesses to restore the planet. veritree helps businesses to achieve more sustainable practices, through verified reforestation, and allows hotels like us, and individuals like you, to track the planting, growth, and success of the trees in real-time.  

 

veritree and The Sutton Place Hotels Partnership 

 

Our partnership with veritree was established as we sought to strengthen our commitment to sustainability. 

With this partnership, we provided a new initiative for guest–your stay, your way–should a guest choose to participate, we plant 5 trees on their behalf. Partnering with veritree allows us and our guests to directly contribute to the restoration of vital ecosystems around the world. veritree has been instrumental in turning a simple opt-out program into a powerful environmental initiative that contributes to lasting change. 

Through veritree’s global reforestation initiative, we are planting trees–one stay at a time–and working towards a more sustainable future. veritree also ensures that every tree planted is fully traceable from start to finish. This includes both local and global projects focused on reforestation, conservation and land management. 

 

The Results 

 

The partnership with veritree has been hugely successful. As a result of this uptake from our guests, we’ve hit some amazing milestones: 

  • 699,940 trees have been planted (the equivalent of 3979 tennis courts full of trees!) 

  • 1713,293 tonnes of C02 to be sequestered (the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide)–that’s the equivalent of taking 37,238 cars off the road for a year! 

  • 78 hectares of land have been reforested, which has also led to 1771 days of work for tree planters

Greenstep Solutions EcoFund Verified

 

We've introduced a $2 per night Eco-Fee at participating Sutton Place locations across Canada, in collaboration with GreenStep Solutions. The funds go directly into a Sutton Place EcoFund, which supports sustainable changes through out hotel groups. This helps us to invest in changes like energy conservation measures and reducing our carbon footprint, that would be otherwise difficult to fund through regular operation budgets.

 

Green Team

 

The Sutton Place Hotels' Green Team meets regularly to share ideas and execute sustainability initiatives across the brand. It is made up of colleagues from all levels of the company. One of the projects that the Green Team worked on recently is the introduction of bulk amenities to The Sutton Place Hotels to reduce single use plastic. The Green Team are also currently investigating the opportunity to install refillable water stations at the hotels, with a pilot program planned in the near future.

 

GreenStep Sustainability Certifications

 

Across The Sutton Place Hotels, we are currently working on our GreenStep Sustainability Certifications, with The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver achieving gold certification and The Sutton Place Hotel Halifax achieving silver certification. These certifications represent our commitment to responsible, sustainable travel and a shared goal: for every Sutton Place hotel to become sustainably certified.

Sustainability is an ongoing process, and we know we still have a lot to learn and improve on. The goal is to keep moving forward, making informed decisions, supporting our teams at property level, and being transparent about what's working and what's still in progress.
